Hydro-Jetting vs. Drain Snaking: Which One Clears Your Clog?

May 15, 2026

Hydro-jetting vs drain snaking comparison

When a drain is slow or backed up, two of the most common professional methods for clearing it are drain snaking and hydro-jetting. They work differently, and choosing the right one depends on the type of clog, the pipe material, and whether the goal is to clear a single blockage or clean the entire pipe wall.

A drain snake — also called an auger — is a long, flexible metal cable with a cutting head or hook at the end. The plumber feeds the cable into the drain opening and rotates it to break up or grab the blockage. The snake punches through the clog to restore flow.

Hydro-jetting uses a high-pressure water stream — often between 1,500 and 4,000 PSI — delivered through a specialized hose with a multi-directional nozzle. The water scours the inside of the pipe wall, removing grease, scale, soap residue, and debris.
