Before sewer cameras became common, diagnosing a sewer line problem often meant digging — either to find the problem or because the only option was to replace the whole line. Today, a camera inspection can show exactly what is happening inside your pipes in real time, letting you make a targeted repair instead of guessing.
A small, waterproof camera is attached to a long flexible cable and fed into the sewer line through a cleanout, a drain opening, or by removing a toilet. The camera transmits live video to a monitor, letting the plumber see the inside of the pipe — its condition, any blockages, and exactly where problems are.
The camera head has built-in lights and can record the footage. Many systems also have a transmitter that lets the plumber mark the exact location of a problem from above ground — so digging is limited to the affected area.
A camera inspection is recommended when:
A camera inspection typically costs a few hundred dollars. Compared to the cost of digging up a yard or breaking through a floor to find a problem by trial and error — or the cost of replacing an entire sewer line that might only need a spot repair — it is one of the most cost-effective diagnostic tools in plumbing.
For homes in older Los Angeles neighborhoods like Studio City, Silver Lake, North Hollywood, and Sherman Oaks — where sewer lines may be 50 to 80 years old — a camera inspection can reveal problems before they become emergencies.
