Many Los Angeles homes are built on concrete slab foundations — and when a water pipe under that slab starts leaking, the damage can spread for weeks or months before anyone notices. A slab leak is one of the most serious plumbing problems a homeowner can face, but catching the signs early can make the difference between a targeted repair and a major restoration project.
A slab leak is a leak in a water pipe — usually a hot or cold supply line — that runs through or under the concrete foundation of the home. Because the pipe is buried in or below the slab, there is no visible puddle or spray to alert you. Instead, the water soaks into the concrete, the soil beneath the foundation, or travels up through cracks into the living space.
### Unexplained water bill increases
If your water usage habits have not changed but the bill keeps rising, water may be running under the slab 24 hours a day. This is often the first and only sign for weeks or months.
### Warm or hot spots on the floor
A hot-water line leak under the slab can create warm areas on the floor that should not be there. Walk barefoot across tiled or concrete floors — if you feel a warm patch in one spot, a hot-water leak may be below.
### Sound of running water when nothing is on
If you hear water moving through pipes — a faint hissing or rushing sound — when all fixtures and appliances are off, water is flowing somewhere. A slab leak is one possibility.
### Cracks in walls or flooring
As water saturates the soil under the foundation, the ground can shift, causing cracks in tile, wood flooring, baseboards, or even drywall. Cracks that appear suddenly or grow quickly deserve attention.
### Damp carpet or flooring
Carpet that stays damp in one area, wood flooring that buckles, or tile that feels cool and moist can all point to water rising from below the slab.
### Low water pressure
A slab leak reduces pressure throughout the home because water is escaping before it reaches your fixtures. If pressure dropped suddenly with no other explanation, a leak may be the cause.
Professional uses specialized equipment to find the leak without digging up the entire floor:
The goal is to narrow the leak to a specific location so only that area needs to be opened for repair — avoiding unnecessary demolition of large sections of flooring.
For a single isolated slab leak, the plumber may open the slab at the leak point, repair the damaged section of pipe, and patch the concrete. For older plumbing systems with multiple leaks, corrosion, or a history of slab leaks, rerouting the water lines through the attic or walls may be a better long-term solution — avoiding future slab leaks entirely.
