When a sewer line is cracked, collapsed, or root-damaged, the traditional repair involves digging a trench the length of the damaged section — through the yard, driveway, or landscaping. Trenchless sewer repair fixes the same problems with minimal digging, often through a single access point. For Los Angeles homes with mature landscaping, hardscaping, or limited access, it can be the difference between a weekend repair and a weeks-long excavation.
There are two main trenchless methods.
### Pipe lining (CIPP — Cured-in-Place Pipe)
A flexible liner coated with epoxy resin is inserted into the damaged pipe through a small access point. The liner is inflated against the inside of the existing pipe, and the resin cures — creating a new pipe within the old pipe. The result is a seamless, corrosion-resistant interior that can last 50 years or more.
Pipe lining works best for pipes that are still structurally sound but have cracks, small root intrusion, or significant internal corrosion. It does not work for collapsed or severely offset pipes.
### Pipe bursting
A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, breaking it apart as it goes, while a new pipe — usually HDPE — is pulled in behind it. This method replaces the entire pipe without digging a full trench.
Pipe bursting works for pipes that are too damaged for lining — collapsed sections, severe offsets, or root damage that has destroyed the pipe structure. It requires access pits at each end but does not require a full-length trench.
Trenchless methods work well when:
Traditional trenching may still be the better choice when the pipe is completely collapsed, when multiple sections are damaged, or when local building codes require specific installation methods.
Trenchless repair typically costs more per foot than traditional trenching for the repair itself — but the total project cost can be lower when you factor in the cost of restoring landscaping, hardscaping, driveways, and walkways that would need to be dug up and replaced with traditional methods.
A can assess your specific situation and recommend the right method based on the pipe condition, depth, access, and what is above the pipe.
